Emotional Intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant, both in the workplace and in our personal lives, to achieve the best results in our everyday life in the healthiest way. And that is especially relevant for Executive Assistants, a somehow unknow and lonely profession.
To begin with, Executive Assistants, for the nature of their work, face even more pressure in the workplace than other positions. EAs manage both the normal duties and the unexpected issues, tame the chaos, put order, organize and create. However, they are part of a team but they are oftentimes seen as outsiders at the same time. They are experts in many areas but their work and their contribution to the success of the business is often overlooked. The EA role description is usually blurry and unclear, the range of tasks, dependant on the executive and the company. It is often complicated to maintain our own motivation (and that of the team), manage disagreements between team members, keep high morale on people, set boundaries to avoid work overload and communicate that boundaries clearly and calmly.
Moreover, EAs usually have the ability to read the mood in the office with just a quick look, know when and how to lighten the mood, be aware of people’s personal or professional troubles and have the resources to provide, fix and arrange anything that is needed -and people call it magic instead of hard work, good connections and incredible expertise. These skills are priceless for any smart executive, who knows the EA is their best ally to have first-hand insight on their team and be confident any problem can be managed efficiently. That is why frequently EAs create deep connections with their executive.
